What does a coffee company have to do with car design, we hear you cry. For Florian Seidl, the same thoughts were running through his head as he debated moving away from a conventional automotive studio. But he needn't have worried. In Fiat’s Centro Stile, he was sculpting, and across Lavazza's industrial design group, he is doing the same — just on a different scale. There are also similarities in terms of HMI, believe it or not, finding the right balance between buttons and screens. "Moving away from the dream of being a car designer was very risky and challenging," the RCA graduate says in this exclusive interview for Car Design Review. "But it was also very gratifying and helped me to grow as a designer." Subscribers can read the full piece on CDN now, or why not order a copy of the hardcover for your coffee table.

Car Design News pays a visit to AFRY in Gothenburg to catch up with head of design Robert Dolton. Fresh from a visit to consumer tech show CES, Dolton is critical of what he sees as ’techwashing’, emphasises the importance of designers bringing back tactility and physical controls. Dolton also takes a pragmatic view of AI and its use as a creative tool, comparing it to past innovations that have now become commonplace.
