With his former F&B background he should comprehend the functional contrasts between use of alien plants and indigenous. The latter of course evolved to excel in their environments, no matter how hostile that may be. Our indigenous littoral foredune plants are salt tolerant sand trapping and stabilising species that increase the resilience and storm buffer capacity of littoral margins. Proof of this resilience was provided by a coastal erosion model stating that SLR would be offset through to year 2100 by the diligent restoration of indigenous halophyte foredune plants (Kouwenhoven & Jenks 2015). And this restoration activity has also been cited by the IPCC as the "least cost and most enduring option known" (Jenks et al in IPCC 4AR 2007).The dunes were previously 'gardened' - with alien non-halophyte plants (marram, gazania etc), but now they are being restored with their former and truly native functional vegetation. The next critical step is to keep the dunes free of invasive alien species like kikuyu, gazania and SA ice plant.
